If defender This is the most important position on the football field, then limiting that player’s effectiveness is the most important thing a defense can do. A team can do this in two ways: it can put pressure on the passer to disrupt his timing, rhythm and accuracy, or it can shut down the opposing receivers.
Each week, after every NFL game has been rated and reviewed, PFF will look at the top defensive players in the 2024 class.
Last year these ratings combined PFF’s coverage grades with our Successful Coverage Exceeds Expectation (SCOE) metric, which measures how well each coverage defender handled off-target coverage snaps. We evaluate each coverage defender’s ability to prevent separation, whether they are targeting the play or not.
These ratings this year they will use the same data, but with the level of play normalized and expectations adjusted. After all, matching up with a receiver is harder than covering a running back, and covering a running back is usually harder than matching up with a zone play.
Here are the top 32 quarterbacks in the 2024 class heading into Week 12.
