Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan praised the bowlers for their 2-1 ODI series win over Australia after defeating Australia by eight wickets in the third and final match at Perth Stadium on Sunday.

It was Pakistan’s first ODI series win over the hosts in 22 years. Chasing a modest target of 141, Pakistani openers Saim Ayoub (42) and Abdullah Shafiq (37) added an 84-run partnership for the first wicket. Rizvan (30 not out) and Babar Azam (28 not out) stitched an unbroken 58-run partnership to get the third wicket over the line in 26.5 overs.

Earlier, after being hit to bat, Australia were bowled out for 140 in 31.5 overs. Sean Abbott (30) was the losing team’s leading scorer. Left-arm spinner Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah claimed three scalps each while Haris Rauf ended up taking two wickets.

“A special moment for me, the nation will be very happy today, in the last couple of years we have not lived up to expectations. I am captain only for the toss and presentations – everyone is giving me tips on the game, the batting group and the bowling group,” Rizwan said at the post-match presentation.

“All credit to the bowlers, Australia is not an easy game, the conditions suit their style of play but the bowlers were outstanding. We must also give credit to the two newcomers, they made the chase easier. They (fans) are not too worried about the result, but the people at home always support us and I want to dedicate this win to them,” the wicketkeeper-batsman added.
