Sri Lanka posted their worst ever Test performance on the second day of their series opener against South Africa at Kingsmead in Durban on Thursday. Marco JansenSri Lanka’s in-form batsmen bit the dust with their blistering speed, but South Africa escaped unscathed. Jansen left Sri Lanka in turmoil to achieve his best performance in a Test innings of 7/13. Even in the face of his blistering pace, Sri Lanka managed to survive in just 13.5 overs and were stuck with a score of just 42. After facing humiliation at the hands of South Africa, Sri Lanka fell to their lowest total in the Test format, surpassing their previous low of 71 against Pakistan in 1994. Remarkably, this was also the lowest total against South Africa in Test cricket, surpassing the previous one. New Zealand’s 45 in 2013 was the lowest.

The entire Sri Lankan team was gathered in the dressing room, preparing for the second innings after being bowled out after just 83 balls (13.5 overs). This is the second lowest number of balls bowled out by a team. South Africa are still in the top spot after being bowled out for 30 runs in 75 balls (12.3 overs) against England at Edgbaston in 1924.

Jansen has been finding his form since the recent T20I series against India. Despite the visiting team humiliating the Proteas in the series 3-1, Jansen emerged as one of the positive players for the host team.

He looked like a man on a mission, stuck to one end, relentless in his approach, and left Sri Lanka bewildered. It was a typical display of South Africa’s pace attack with the new ball, even if the Sri Lankan batsmen were tempted into false shots.

With Sri Lanka trailing by 42 points, South Africa managed to grab a healthy lead of 149 points and strengthen their early position.
