Prithvi Shaw is definitely going through the toughest time of his cricket career. The right-handed batter who was once touted as “the next Sachin Tendulkar” failed to find any takers at the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, held last month. The 2018 Under-19 World Cup-winning captain was tipped to be the next big thing in Indian cricket, but his fall in recent years Shaw was even dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad for several years before he went unsold for the Indian cricket team. IPL auction at a base price of Rs 75 lakh. He is currently playing for Mumbai in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy but has failed to impress with his performance so far.

Former BCCI selector Jatin Paranjap believes the youngster needs a “complete overhaul of his mental mindset”. Paranjape shared his views in his column for Sports stars.

Paranjape, who also has experience of playing 4 ODI matches for India and has also featured in 62 First Class and 44 List A games, also noted that Shaw needs to lose some weight to improve.

“If I were Prithvi, I would quickly assess and come to the conclusion that fitness is the main missing element in his game. Without her, his future in cricket is uncertain. I would emphasize this aspect that if he can shed 7 to 10 kilograms of body weight without loss of strength, that would be a crucial start,” said the former BCCI selector.

“If I were him, I would camp in Chennai with Ramji Srinivasan for 10 days and devote the next two or three years entirely to this transformation. The results would start showing in the next 45 to 60 days,” he added.

Paranjape further said that Shaw needs to improve his game against spin and ensure that he does not lose his wicket easily.

“Let’s get to the skills part. I have often told him that he seems to be too generous with his wickets, especially against spinners. Almost every domestic spinner in India has managed to pull it off. He needs to re-evaluate his game against spin,” he said.
