‘Big loss for Karnataka’: Anil Kumble mourns SM Krishna’s death



Former cricketer Anil Kumble on Tuesday condoled the death of former Karnataka Chief Minister SM Krishna, calling it a big loss for the nation. Mr. Krishna passed away at the age of 92 in the early hours of Tuesday at his residence in Sadashvinagar. Speaking to reporters, Kumble said SM Krishna’s contribution to the nation as chief minister goes beyond his term. “His death is a huge loss for Karnataka…His contribution to the state as CM goes beyond his tenure. His contribution in itself was to make Bengaluru a ‘Silicon Valley’ and put its name on the map.” And it will always be remembered…,” Kumble said.

Krishna had been suffering from a long-term illness and was hospitalized in early August.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, a long-time friend of Krishna, said the funeral will be held in Krishna’s hometown, Somanahalli in Mandya district, on Wednesday.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed shock over the death and said Karnataka will remain grateful for Krishna’s contribution to the growth of IT-BT.

Furthermore, Siddaramya writes that Krishna was an enemy of Ajatsatru and also his mentor in the early days of the Congress.

Krishna, 92, was the Chief Minister of Karnataka from October 11, 1999 to May 28, 2004, and the Foreign Minister in Manmohan Singh’s United Progressive Alliance government from 2009 to 2012. He also served as Governor of Maharashtra.

He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in March 2017, ending nearly 50 years of association with the Congress. He retired from active politics last year.
