Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc has paid tribute to newly retired India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin, saying he was a “bit of a thorn” in their team’s side in some memorable competitions Down Under. Ashwin, India’s leading spinner, surprised the cricket world on Wednesday by announcing his retirement midway through the Test series against Australia. He retired as India’s second highest wicket-taker in Tests with 537 scalps from 106 matches, second only to the legendary Anil Kumble (619 wickets).

Ashwin played 23 Tests against Australia from 2011 to 2024, taking 115 scalps, including 10-wicket hauls and seven five-wicket hauls. He was also instrumental in India’s stunning series win in 2020-21.

“He (Ashwin) has always been a thorn in our side in India and played a role in the series here in Australia. It’s been a fantastic career and I’m sure it will be celebrated that way,” Starc told SEN. Radio after the third test here ended in a draw.

“His numbers speak for themselves. He has been an incredible bowler for India for a long time, taking over 500 wickets.” Ashwin had a great relationship with Australian underdog Nathan Lyon, both of whom took over 500 wickets.

“He (Ashwin) has a close working relationship with Nathan (Lyon) and such mutual respect between teams and a man of his caliber – congratulations on his career. It’s been a fantastic career and I’m sure it will be celebrated as such.” “Stark added.
