Australia have included uncapped all-rounder Beau Webster in their squad for the second Test against India as cover for Mitchell Marsh, whose fitness remains a concern. Marsh pulled up “in pain” after Australia scored 295 runs in the series opener in Perth earlier this week. Webster, like Marsh, is a right-handed pace all-rounder who has been outstanding in the Sheffield Shield for the past two years. The 30-year-old has scored 1788 runs, including 500 and 950.
He starred in Tasmania’s Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales earlier this week, picking up five wickets and scoring 61 and 49 runs.
“It was nice to get some runs and wickets (for Australia A) against a strong Indian team,” Webster said ahead of Thursday’s announcement, according to cricket.com.au. Ta.
“Whenever you’re playing ‘A’ cricket, it’s one level below Test level, so that keeps you grounded. At the end of New South Wales, the ‘Bales’ (Men’s Selection Committee) The game was a really proud moment to get the call from George Bailey, the head coach, and I can’t wait to get into it.
“It’s a close contest between Adelaide and Govt Test, so I think either way it goes, (I’ll be there) to cover a bit of a mid-order role,” he added.
In addition to explosive batting, Webster added seam bowling to his abilities. I added this skill to my repertoire just four years ago.
He was named Sheffield Shield Player of the Year last summer and has continued his form this season, and will join the squad in Adelaide next week.
Despite the disappointing result in the opening game of the series, manager Andrew MacDonald has vowed there will be no changes to the home team ahead of the pink-ball Test in Adelaide, which begins on December 6.
Meanwhile, Jack Nisbet has been called up to the Prime Minister’s eleven against India in Canberra this weekend in place of Jem Ryan, who suffered a leg injury at the weekend.
Australia squad for second Test: Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey (wk), Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitch Marsh, Nathan Mak Sweeney, Steve Smith, Mitchell Stark, Beau Webster.
