indian bowling coach Morne Morkel We chose a young all-rounder. Nitish Kumar Reddy has been selected as a player to watch for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. As time passes and the series opener in Perth inches closer, the excitement surrounding the series between the two Test giants has been high. meanwhile Virat Kohli, jasprit bumrah, rishabh pants and the captain Rohit Sharma Morkel, who was expected to play a crucial role in the series, threw a new name into the fray. “He’s definitely the guy to watch in the series (Nitish),” Morkel said at a press conference in Perth ahead of Friday’s opening Test.
The youngster made his name known to the world with his brilliant all-round performance in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL).
Nitish, who was part of Sunrisers Hyderabad, scored 303 runs in 13 matches at an average of 33.67. He also chipped in with three wickets, but it was his relentless power-hitting qualities that stood out the most.
Having played just 23 first-class matches, Nitish’s entry into the BGT series came as a surprise to many.
It was clear that the management was trying to rapidly develop Nitish as India’s most desired seam bowling option.
“He (Nitish Reddy) is one of the young players. (He) has all-round ability. He will be the one who will last for us, especially in the first few days.” Morkel said. “(He is) a wicket-to-wicket bowler. Every team in the world would want an all-rounder who can help the pacer. It will be up to Jasprit (Bumrah) how he uses the pacer.” added Morkel.
Looking at Nitish’s performance in red-ball cricket, it seems like he is a bit under-prepared to feature in one of the biggest Test series.
In these 23 appearances, Nitish scored 779 runs at an average of just 21.05. He was even more impactful with the ball, taking 56 scalps and averaging 26.98 points.
In the recent unofficial Test between India A and Australia A, Nitish had a less-than-ideal match, with his highest score of 38 and the only wicket in four innings.
