Canelo Alvarez has been the face of boxing for the past five years. The Mexican superstar has gone down in history after becoming arguably the biggest PPV draw in the post-Floyd Mayweather era. He achieved undisputed status at 168 pounds when many believed he was fighting above his best weight. Now, he looks to continue his incredible run Saturday night in Las Vegas as part of the Mexican Independence Day weekend.

Alvarez will put his trio of titles on the line in a super middleweight clash when he welcomes undefeated Edgar Berlanga to the ring inside the T-Mobile Arena.

While many expected Alvarez to fight someone like David Benavidez or David Morrell — two of the best fighters at 168 pounds in the last few years who haven’t had the chance to face him — the champion opted instead for a matchup that could make it the long boxing of Mexico and Puerto Rico. Draw more eyes with rivals.

Alvarez was beating his fellow countryman when he dismissed Jaime Munguia in May. Berlanga, meanwhile, began his career with a record-setting knockout streak in first-round fights at 16. He’s looked more human since then, but he picked up a TKO in his last outing against Padraig McCorry.

“It’s easy to say you’re going to knock me out, but it’s a lot harder to do it. Saturday night is going to be tough for him, for sure. I’m ready for a knockout. I love the feeling of a knockout and I’m going to do my best to get it done, ” Alvarez said this week. “I just can’t wait for Saturday night. It’s going to be a great match for people. Mexico vs. Puerto Rico is always exciting.”
