Floyd Mayweather’s spectacular boxing career continues this Saturday when he faces John Gotti III. The fight is a rematch of a June 2023 exhibition where a brawl broke out after referee Kenny Bayless stopped the fight in the sixth round.
Mayweather was in control of the first meeting when Bayless stopped the fight after repeated warnings for roughing by Gotti. Gotti walked past Mayweather and began throwing punches, forcing Mayweather back until members of both fighters’ camps entered the ring. Post-fight brawls eventually forced the arena to be vacated.
Mayweather and Gotti now go at it again at Mexico City’s Arena CDMX, though tensions between the two appear to have settled as the rematch approaches.
Mayweather retired from professional boxing in August 2017 after defeating UFC superstar Conor McGregor to run his record to a perfect 50-0. Since retiring, Mayweather has fought seven exhibitions.
“I’m back in Mexico again. I talked about it the other day. The country of Mexico. The boxing legacy in the whole country. It’s been incredible since I was a kid,” Mayweather said at the final presser. conference this week.” So many legendary champions. So many legendary fighters.
“I want to thank my team and Gotis. Let’s go out there and put on a show. One thing about me is that I’ve heard it all. I’ve been all over the world and competed against the best. When you talk about the Olympics, whether I’ve competed against the best Take Mexican boxing legend Roger Mayweather. He was short twice, but he always fought the best.
Gotti is the grandson and son of notorious crime lords John Gotti and John Gotti Jr.
“This is the best shape of my life,” Gotti III said. “I don’t have any weight to lose here, and I was a little underweight in Florida, but I’m already at weight and I’m excited.
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime trip. Like my dad said, Floyd honored his word and gave me the rematch. He didn’t need it. He could have gone ahead and done his job and I appreciate that. We’re going. It’s going to be a good show. It’s going to be exciting.”
The undercard sees veteran Victor Ortiz return to the ring with Rodrigo Damian Correa. Ortiz, 37, has been out of action since a May 2022 win over Todd Manuel in which Ortiz earned a unanimous decision but was dropped in the 10th round.
