Boxing great Floyd Mayweather Jr. rematched John Gotti III in an exhibition Saturday night in Mexico City. Thankfully, the fight didn’t end in a fight like their June 2023 meeting. While Mayweather clearly dominated the action, no winner was declared as the fight was an exhibition.
Mayweather was careful not to give Gotti a chance to work effectively, instead leaning heavily on his jab and following up with a straight right hand to control the action. As the rounds ticked off, Gotti was visibly frustrated by Mayweather’s standard economic and effective approach to the “sweet science”.
The fight was an exhibition, consisting of eight, two-minute rounds, with no significant results likely. This has been standard practice for exhibition fights since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, with Mayweather only bringing his best game to fights with Japanese kickboxers whose results will be announced at the end.
As in his exhibition bouts with Logan Paul, Mayweather was content to continue the fight within the allotted time for the fight to be clearly more than two men in the ring. At the conclusion of the eighth round, no winner was declared.
Mayweather and Gotti hugged after the fight, a stark contrast to the brawl that followed their first fight.
Throughout his professional career, Mayweather had many notable fights with Mexican superstars. With an exhibition held on hostile soil, Mayweather was grateful to the crowd.
“Mexico City,” Mayweather said. “Thanks for coming out.”
