As a former South African cricketer Gary Kirsten joined the Pakistan men’s team as a limited overs coach, few in the Indian cricket community were happy about it. Kirsten was the coach of the Indian team when MS DhoniThe team under his leadership won the ICC ODI World Cup in 2011. Seeing Kirsten joining the team across the border, many fans and former Indian cricketers were unhappy. In fact, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh even asked him to return to the Indian team as head coach. Now that Kirsten has stepped down as Pakistan coach, Harbhajan has had the last laugh.
“Don’t waste your time, Gary. Come back to the Indian coaching team. Gary Kirsten One of those rare gems. Great coach, mentor, friend to everyone in the 1202 team. Our coach is the winner of the 2011 World Championship. Special Dude, Gary @Gary_Kisten,” Harbhajan Singh wrote in a post on X after Pakistan made an early exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup.

When Kirsten tendered her resignation as Pakistan’s white-ball coach, a fan reminded everyone of the warning Harbhajan gave to Kirsten after he took over the position.
Harbhajan too reacted to this ‘reminder’ and shared a couple of laughing emojis.

There have been a lot of changes in the Pakistan team over the past few weeks. After Pakistan’s defeat to England in the first Test in Multan, the PCB decided to change the entire selection committee. Pakistan won the next two matches, but questions still remain about how the board works. Mohammad Rizwan also replaced Babar Azam as the new white ball team captain, another change that came into effect following Kirsten’s resignation.
