Former cricketer Kapil Dev believes it is too early to judge whether Jasprit Bumrah is the “best candidate available” to replace Rohit Sharma as captain when the time comes. The Indian team entered the Optus Stadium in Perth amidst a swaggering atmosphere. Bumrah captained the visitors in the absence of Rohit, who was unavailable due to personal reasons. Putting relentless pressure on Australia, India cruised to victory with a record 295 run win over the hosts to go up 1-0 in the series.
When the series moved from Perth to Adelaide, parity was restored after Australia crushed India’s dreams with a 10-wicket win to make the score 1–1.
The 31-year-old has already captained the Indian team twice. In his first match he was defeated by England in Birmingham in 2022.
With questions surrounding Rohit’s future as India captain, some fans have backed Bumrah to take over the role once the dynamic opener’s spell ends.
However, the World Cup-winning captain believes a player should be judged by how he reacts in difficult situations and not by the time he achieves success.
“I think it’s too early to talk about it. You can’t say from one performance that he is one of the best, and you can’t say from one bad performance that he doesn’t deserve it. Let the player play. a lot of cricket. There will be ups and downs. Then you will judge how he reacts in difficult times,” Kapil told reporters on Monday during an event.
With the series level at 1-1, the Brisbane Test could put significant pressure on India in their quest to secure a hat-trick and BGT victory in Australia.
While many were speculating on what India’s response would be to the defeat in Adelaide, Kapil expressed faith in the Rohit-led side and said, “Yes, they will come back.”
