Australia dough Travis Head shared his views on the pitch at Perth’s Optus Stadium for their first Test against Australia starting on Friday. There was heavy rain in Perth on the eve of the match, making pitch preparation difficult. However, the Optus Stadium chief curator said the pacers would pick up extra pace and rebound, downplaying concerns about “snake cracks” on the deck. Head said while he enjoys hitting the ball in Perth, the course can get a bit challenging in the final two days, describing parts of it as “horrifying”.
“I know I enjoyed batting here – bits and pieces. There are parts of this wicket that can be terrifying, even something so simple. I think everyone was talking about it. fifth, it can be difficult,” Head said.
Head also spoke briefly about his preparation for the inflatable tracks, revealing that he trained with yellow balls in England during the last Ashes.
“I did this a lot in England. I don’t think I had a net session after the first Test where I faced cricket balls. I just faced the yellow balls because I knew (short balls) was all they were going to do. When you go through a long series, and I think I was the one who handled it for most of this series, I thought I’d have a little laugh and go to training without my pads – so I might go out again,” he added.
On the decision to train with yellow balls, Head said: “I don’t want to break my finger, but I want to train it. It’s not fun to train and it’s hard to do and the visibility and wickets (make it) not as (easy) to fight against as in the middle.”
