Star Indian rower Manika Batra shocked world number 14 Bernadette Soch of Romania by reaching the quarter-finals of the WTT Champions Women’s Singles in Montpellier, France. India’s world number 30 won 3-1 (11-9, 6-11, 13-11, 11-9) in 29 minutes against eighth seed Socha in their round of 16 match on Friday night. Batra, a multiple Commonwealth Games medalist, saved two game points in the third game to stay ahead and then sealed the draw in the next game by converting her second match point.
Batra is now 6-5 in head-to-head matches with Shoch.
She also defeated Socha in India’s 3-2 win over Romania in the quarter-finals of the Paris Olympics.
Batra will face China’s Qian Tianyi on Saturday.
World number 21 Qian stunned top seed and compatriot Wang Yidi 3-0 (11-7 11-9 13-11) in another round of 16 match.
Batra defeated American Lily Zhang 3-0 (11-4 11-8 12-10) in the first round.
Another Indian competing in the women’s singles, Srija Akula lost 2-3 (11-6, 7-11, 1-11, 11-8, 8-11) to world number 13 Adriana Diaz of Puerto Rico in the first match. round.
