‘Insulted Sunil Gavaskar’: Australian cricket captain slams Australia’s World Cup-winning captain for neglecting Gavaskar’s border trophy

Controversy ensued after Australia beat India 3-1 in the 2024-25 Border Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney on Sunday. Legendary Sunil Gavaskar expressed his displeasure at not being invited to present the trophy named after him and Allan Border to Australia after their victory over India in the high-voltage five-match rubber. Australia regained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after 10 years by defeating India by six wickets in the fifth and final Test. Border presented the trophy to the home team but Gavaskar, despite being in the stadium at the same time, was inexplicably ignored.

“I, of course, would very much like to attend the presentation. At the end of the day, this is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and it is about Australia and India,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying by Code Sports.

“I mean, I’m here on earth. It shouldn’t matter to me that Australia won when it comes to presentation. They played better cricket and that’s why they won. This is fine”.

“Only because I am Indian. I would be delighted to present the trophy to my good friend Allan Border,” he added.

Now Cricket Australia has come under fire from Michael Clarkecaptain of the Australian team that won the 2015 World Cup.

“I just think Cricket Australia has missed a trick. Now I know that a lot of people don’t know that it was planned even before the series started that if India wins, Sunil Gavaskar will present the trophy. If Australia win, Alan Border will present the trophy, so it wasn’t a surprise to those two guys, but it just doesn’t make sense to me,” Michael Clarke said on Around the Wicket.

“Regardless of who won, in my opinion, they both should have gone, they both should have been on stage, they both should have presented the trophy. I think we were very lucky to have both Allan Border and Sunny Gavaskar in the line-up. the country comments at the right time. Both legends of the game named after the trophy still exist and are in the country at the same time. So I just think we’ve missed the trick. I think it sounds to me like, You know, it obviously had an impact, it also offended Sunny and I can understand why, I think they both should have been on that stage presenting that trophy, no matter who won.”
