India stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah admitted that if “all goes well”, veteran pacer Mohammed Shami will excel in Australian conditions in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Shami’s exclusion from the Indian squad for the BGT series has become one of the most talked about topics during the intensifying preparations for the five-match Test series. After playing in the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, the 34-year-old spent a year on the sidelines before returning to the tournament for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy.
Shami’s elegance and blistering pace against Madhya Pradesh was enough for many former stars to push his idea of becoming a part of the Indian bowling team in Australia.
Bowling coach Morne Morkel witnessed Shami’s competitiveness in the nets during India’s home Test against New Zealand. On Wednesday, he confirmed that Shami’s progress was being closely monitored.
Bumrah has recognized the importance that Shami plays in the Indian Red Ball team and acknowledged the possibility of the right-arm seamer traveling to Australia to take part in the demanding Test series.
“Shami has been an integral part of the team and is being closely monitored by the management. If all goes well, you might see him here too,” Bumrah told reporters ahead of the first Test in Perth on Friday.
Before the start of the series, various reports suggested that Shami would travel to Australia to push India to retain the title.
Returning to competitive cricket, Shami upped the pace of the blitzkrieg and took Bengal over the finishing line with a mouth-watering performance in the Ranji Trophy, returning with figures of 7/57.
With his consistent line and length, a trait he is well known for, Shami has rocked the Madhya Pradesh team at various stages.
Before the management turns to an experienced seamer, Shami will continue to perform in the domestic market. He has been included in Bengal’s squad for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
