France’s Ligue 1 league announced on Wednesday that two Lille fans were stabbed in an attack by dozens of Bologna fans before the two teams’ Champions League match. Lille said in a statement that two fans had been “treated” after the attack outside a bar in the northern Italian city late Tuesday. “The club condemns in its entirety this despicable and intolerable attack, which goes against all values of football,” Lille said before Wednesday’s match. Citing local police, Italian media reported that 80 suspected Bologna supporters, armed with metal bars and belts, assaulted about 30 Lille fans outside a bar in the city’s university district.
Videos posted online show large groups of men, mostly dressed in black and wearing balaclavas, roaming the streets.
Police said three Lille fans were injured in the attack, and all three were treated and released from Bologna’s Sant’Orsola hospital.
Lille are in 17th place and fighting for a play-off spot in the last 16 of the Champions League, while Bologna have one point after four games and are battling to avoid elimination.
