Mansi Ahlawat won the bronze medal, extending India’s medal-winning record at the world championships, but the men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers will return home empty-handed. Competing in the women’s 59kg category, Mansi trained under coach Mandeep at Sir Chotu Ram Akhada and defeated Canada’s Lawrence Beauregard 5-0 in the bronze medal match. She won her third straight match on Wednesday, but lost 4-1 to Mongolia’s Sukhi Tserenchimed in the semifinals.
Manisha Bhanwala (65kg) also came close to the podium, but lost 2-8 to Japan’s Miwa Morikawa in the bronze medal playoff.
Manisha regained her footing with a 7-2 victory over Mongolia’s Enkhuzin Tovsinjargal in the repechage match.
Kirti (55kg) and Bipasha (72kg) failed to reach the medal round.
In the men’s freestyle, Sandeep Mann (92kg) advanced to the repechage, but lost to Slovakia’s Butirbek Tzakurov due to technical superiority.
Udit (61kg), Manish Goswami (70kg) and Parvinder Singh (79kg) failed to win any medals.
India’s Greco-Roman wrestlers struggled as usual with Sanjeev (55kg), Chetan (63kg), Ankit Guria (72kg) and Rohit Dahiya (82kg) fading out early in the match.
