Captain India Rohit Sharma At the press conference after the Melbourne Test, he confirmed that he had spoken with the team’s players on various matters including, but not limited to, the selection of the XI. However, the report makes an explosive claim stating that Rohit’s communication with some of the team’s “not so junior” players broke down after Gautam Gambhir replaced Rahul Dravid as India’s head coach. Rohit, who doesn’t shy away from speaking his mind, claims to have kept his conversations with players fairly open, but that doesn’t seem to be the whole story.
A PTI report claims that captain Rohit claims that he is talking to players individually regarding selection matters. But after Gambhir took charge of the team in July, Rohit is said to have never really explained to some of the not-so-young players why they were left out of the squad from time to time.
His own poor form did not help Rohit’s cause. But it is also certain that Gambhir, considered to be the more assertive individual, has not earned much trust from a group of players who are not as old as Kohli or Rohit, but are not newcomers like Harshit Rana or Nitish Reddy.
Apparently the report talks about players with average experience in the team such as Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj, KL Rahul etc.
The report further claims that Gambhir’s role as India’s head coach could be in jeopardy if results do not improve quickly. With India barely in the ICC World Test Championship race, Gambhir’s fate as the team’s head coach could be decided in the upcoming Champions Trophy.
“There is a Test match to be played and then there will be the Champions Trophy. If the results do not improve, even Gautam Gambhir’s position will not be safe,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on condition of anonymity.
Gambhir’s relationship with the admissions committee is also not particularly clear at the moment.
