Saim Ayub scored an unbeaten 113 as Pakistan defeated Zimbabwe by 10 wickets in Bulawayo on Tuesday to level the one-day international series with one match to go. Zimbabwe fielded a full 145 at the Queens Sports Club as they sought their second win over the tourists in three days, having won by 80 points in the rain-shortened first round. Pakistan then atoned for their poor performance on Sunday with Ayub and fellow opener. Abdullah Shafiq (32 not out), they were unstoppable as they reached their target in 18.2 overs. Ayub hit 17 runs and three sixes off 62 balls in a 75-minute stand while Shafiq hit four fours in the southern city. Ayub reached his century off 53 balls, the second highest in an ODI international by a Pakistani after Shahid Afridi.
Zimbabwe, aiming for a maiden ODI series win over Pakistan, used five bowlers but none of them impressed. Brandon Troublewho conceded 47 runs in four overs was particularly costly.
After winning the toss, Zimbabwe quickly ran into trouble with openers Joylord Gambi (five) and We found Marumani (four) returned to the pavilion with less than four overs to complete.
Only Dion Myershitting six fours in his 33 years, and a veteran Sean Williamswho scored 31 before being caught at leg by Ayoub impressed the home side.
Pakistani born all-rounder Sikandar RazaZimbabwe’s frequent saver was just 17 years old before becoming one of Salman Ali Agha’s three victims.
Abrar Ahmed took four wickets and Ali Agha three for Pakistan, who arrived in South Africa after a 3-0 ODI series defeat in Australia.
Zimbabwe’s ODI series decider is scheduled for Thursday, followed by three Twenty20 internationals on Sunday, also in Bulawayo. Pakistan will then visit South Africa for a full tour.
