One of the standout moments of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction was the bidding for 13-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi. As it turns out, Suryavanshi became the youngest player ever bought in an IPL auction and was sold to Rajasthan Royals (RR) for Rs 1.1 crore. Captain RR Sanju Samson has now revealed the thought process that led to the 13-year-old’s franchise bid and stated that his purchase is completely in line with the philosophy and principles of Rajasthan Royals.
“I saw his best moments. All the people in the Rajasthan decision group saw him bat in the U19 Test match against Australia in Chennai where he scored a hundred in 60-70 balls. it feels like something special,” Samson told the great South African cricketer. AB de Villiers in an interview about the latter YouTube channel.
“We felt like we needed to have people like that on the team and see where they go,” Samson added.
Suryavanshi has been breaking record after record since he hit the stage in 2024. After the IPL 2025 auction, he starred for India U-19 team in the 2024 Men’s U-19 Asia Cup, where he finished with an average of 44 and a strike rate of 145.
He also became the youngest player ever to feature in the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy and will also break the record of being the youngest player in IPL history if he plays in the 2025 season.
Samson explained the RR think tank’s logic in getting Suryavanshi.
“The royal family of Rajasthan has this history. They find talent and make them champions. For example, there is Yashasvi Jaiswal who joined RR as a teenager and is now a rock star of the Indian team. Eat Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel – they all fall under this line. I think RR likes things like that – yes, we want to win the IPL, but we also want to make sure that we give enough champions to Indian cricket,” Samson said.
The one-time IPL champions will be coached by an Indian legend. Rahul Dravid in IPL 2025.
