Sports Authority of India intervenes after ‘Dil Luminati’ riot at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium: Stadium is cleared after outrage

Hours after the dismal state of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium following singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh’s two-day concert sparked outrage, its owner, the Sports Authority of India (SAI), said the iconic venue had been cleared and ready. hold its next sporting event on October 31st. The widespread clogging at the end of Dosanjh’s ‘Dil-Luminati’ concert on Saturday and Sunday, which attracted nearly 40,000 fans each night, drew sharp criticism from Delhi-based athletes who regularly train at the stadium. stadium.

This is not the first time such an event has been held at this venue: in the past, concerts of leading world stars such as Bryan Adams (2004) and Ricky Martin (1998) have been held here. But the fallout from Dosanjh’s speech was heavily criticized by athletes.

After the criticism went viral on social media, the SAI swung into action and issued a statement saying that the competition area and its surroundings had been restored.

“The main arena of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will be in excellent shape to host the Indian Super League (ISL) football match between Punjab FC and Chennaiyin FC on October 31, 2024 (Thursday). The turf was restored to pre-Diwali playing condition. game,” the SAI said, along with photographs of the restored facility.

Earlier, Delhi middle-distance runner Beant Singh posted images and videos of the stadium’s athletics area, which was littered with rubbish, alcohol containers and damaged sports equipment.

“Athletes train here, and here people drink, dance and have fun. Due to things like this, the stadium will be closed for 10-10 days. Athletics equipment such as hurdles are broken and scattered here and there,” he wrote on Instagram.

“This is the situation with sports, athletes and stadiums in India… medals are not awarded at the Olympics because there is no respect and support for athletes in this country.” Singh, 25, won silver and bronze at the national open championships in 2014 and 2018 respectively.

The traffic police, for its part, stated that its agreement with the concert organizers was very clear – the stadium will be returned to the organization “in the same condition in which it was handed over to them.” “The organizers of the Diljit Dosanjh concert have reserved the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium till October 28, 2024 for cleaning at full rent,” the statement said.

A Delhi-based coach told PTI that some athletes have approached the SAI seeking compensation as their hurdles and boxes containing starting blocks and other equipment such as shot put, discus and medicine ball were damaged.

“Each obstacle costs Rs 3,000-4,000 and for the 400m you need 10 hurdles or 100m hurdles or 110m. These young athletes have saved up the money to buy this equipment, and it’s not easy for them.

“The locks of the boxes containing starting blocks and other equipment such as shot put, discus and medicine ball were damaged and broken. Thus, some equipment was damaged,” the coach said on condition of anonymity.

“So, the athletes wrote to the SAI for compensation, we’ll see what happens.” According to him, athletes were ordered not to train at the stadium until October 31.

“They will not be able to train on the stadium tracks for 10 days until October 31. We are training on the outer track, but the condition there is not very good.

“This disrupted the athletes’ training schedule. We have national junior championships and national school competitions coming up.” This is not the first time that JLN Stadium has been left in such a dirty state after public events attended by large numbers of people.

“Athletes who train here have expressed their disappointment before, but nothing has changed,” said a Delhi-based athlete on condition of anonymity.

There are currently no national training camps being held at the stadium. However, it is part of SAI’s “Come and Play” scheme, which allows children and beginners to use the stadium facilities for free for training purposes.

The facility was built to host the 1982 Asian Games athletics competition. It was renovated for the 2010 Commonwealth Games and hosted the opening and closing ceremonies for the exhibit.
