Terence Crawford vs. Conor McGregor was once on the table. Both sides confirmed a phone call about a two-fight series, one in boxing and one in mixed martial arts, but Crawford said that’s not happening.
McGregor made a claim this week dualbits Livestream that rejected the Crawford fight. Crawford has since vindicated McGregor’s words. Crawford, an undisputed boxing champion in two weight classes, confirmed that he has no interest in an MMA fight against the former two-division UFC champion.
“They offered me a fight,” Crawford said Barney the Boxer Wednesday “Me and Conor got on the phone and started politicking to try to figure something out. Man, I’m no match for you in the Octagon so you can kick and elbow me!
“He was like, ‘I respect that,'” Crawford said. “‘You respect my game just like I respect yours. You understand that if you get in the Octagon with me, you’re at a disadvantage. Just like if I got in the boxing ring with you, I’m a disadvantage.'”
Turki Alalsikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, has proposed a crossover fight. McGregor claimed the two-fight deal would pay “hundreds of millions”.
Crawford (41-0 in boxing) is one of three boxers to simultaneously hold four recognized world titles in two weight classes. McGregor (22-6 in MMA) was the first fighter to simultaneously hold two-division UFC champions. Despite having some wrestling experience, Crawford has never fought in MMA. McGregor famously boxed Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2017, losing by round 10 TKO.
