The BCCI carried out a comprehensive review of India’s shock 0-3 defeat against New Zealand, selecting the Mumbai Test player, discussing the rested Jasprit Bumrah and Gautam Gambhir’s coaching style. Skipper Rohit Sharma, chairman of selection committee Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gambhir, along with BCCI secretary Jay Shah and president Roger Binney were present on the occasion. Gambhir joined the meeting online. As it became known, questions were asked about certain decisions made by the team management during the series.
Gambhir’s coaching style, which is very different from his predecessor Rahul Dravid’s, and how the team is adjusting to it were also discussed.
“It was a six-hour marathon meeting, which was obviously on the cards after such a fiasco. India are going to tour Australia and the BCCI would obviously like to make sure the team is back on track and would like to know how things stand.” (Gambhir-Rohit-Agarkar) are going to do it,” a senior BCCI source familiar with the development told PTI on condition of anonymity.
It is learned that the BCCI mandarins were not entirely happy with pace leader and team vice-captain Bumrah being rested for the third Test and why the team chose a replacement after losing on a similar surface in Pune.
“Bumrah’s absence was discussed although it was a precautionary measure. Choosing a replacement despite India not doing a good job in these tasks is one of the issues that has come up for discussion,” the source said.
The trio were asked to provide suggestions on how corrective measures could be taken.
It is impossible to confirm whether Gambhir’s coaching style was questioned or not, but it is known that some people in the Indian team’s think tank are not on the same page with the head coach.
The selection of T20 all-rounder Nitish Reddy and opener Harshit Rana, who has played just 10 Ranji Trophy matches, was not unanimous, to say the least.
The Indian team will travel to Australia in two batches on November 10 and 11.
