In recent weeks, we have introduced a metric called “Extended Coverage Level” which adds even more context to PFF’s traditional coverage evaluation.

What is Extended Coverage?

Enhanced Coverage Level uses machine learning to map the split allowed in a game to the expected PFF coverage level a player would receive if he were targeted. This system also takes into account the complexity of the task and the situation when making this assessment.

Variables considered in assignment and situation include playing position, coverage player distribution, overall coverage scheme, safety rotation, press coverage, route depth and play action.

In the old school, this is a +/- grading system, although 0 does not necessarily mean expected or average results.
