Kabaddi players from Tamil Nadu, who were participating in an inter-university competition in Bathinda, Punjab, were reportedly attacked on Friday. According to media reports, the fight occurred after the players were unhappy with the match referee’s decision. Student-athletes from various universities such as Mother Teresa University, Periyar University, Alagappa University and Bharathiar University competed in the North Zone Inter-University Championship and the All India Inter-University Kabaddi Championship (Women) 2024-25.
According to a report in India todaythe athletes were allegedly attacked first by the players of the opposing team. The report added that a “violent assault” caused against Mother Teresa University during a game with Darbhanga University led to an altercation. A Kabaddi match referee attacked a member of Mother Teresa’s team after an argument broke out following an appeal.
In a video that has gone viral on social media, players can be seen fighting with several men. It is unclear from the video whether they were officials or spectators. Both sides also threw chairs.

Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin said the girls were safe and would return to the state soon.
“There was a small incident this morning. I spoke to the Director of Physical Education, Mr. Kalaiarasi. Now everything is under control. No serious injuries or anything. The students were given first aid. They will return to Delhi and be treated. they were made to stay at Delhi House (Tamil Nadu House in Delhi) this evening. They are leaving Delhi at night the day after tomorrow. They will arrive in Chennai very soon,” he said.
