Former India cricketer Vinod Kambli, admitted to the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Thane district, developed a fever on Tuesday but his condition was stable, doctors treating him said on Tuesday. Kambli (52) is responding to treatment for a urinary tract infection for which he was admitted to Akruti Hospital near Bhiwandi on Saturday (December 21), Dr Vivek Trivedi told PTI. Trivedi heads the medical team that is monitoring the former cricketer’s health. Doctors had planned to do an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan on the former India player, but since he had developed a fever, a decision on the non-invasive medical procedure would be taken later, he said. According to Trivedi, the need for an MRI procedure arose after a series of medical tests conducted earlier revealed blood clots in his brain.
Kambli will likely be moved out of the intensive care unit within a day or two and discharged in about four days, he said.
He said the former Mumbai cricketer’s condition was critical four days ago when he developed a severe urinary tract infection as pus accumulated in his bladder. The pus was removed when he was admitted to the hospital.
Staying at home for a few more days would have complicated his condition, Trivedi said, adding that his blood pressure was also fluctuating when he was taken to the hospital.
His condition is currently stable, the doctor added.
“His condition will be closely monitored over the next 24 hours and a decision will be made to transfer him out of the intensive care unit,” he added.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the Shrikant Shinde Foundation, run by his MP son, have come forward to help Kambli.
On the instructions of Eknath Shinde, his Officer on Special Duty (OSD) Mangesh Chivte visited the hospital to inquire about the former cricketer’s health, said an official release issued by the Deputy CM’s office in Thane on Tuesday evening.
Chivte also worked with the hospital’s medical staff to ensure Kambli received the best possible care during his treatment.
Kalyan Lok Sabha MP Shrikant Shinde, son of Eknath Shinde, announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to Kambli. The assistance will be provided through the Dr Shrikant Shinde Foundation next week, it said.
Moreover, Shrikant Shinde assured Kambli and his family of continued support in the coming days, reports OSD Chiwte.
Kambli expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the sensitive leadership of the state, particularly Eknath Shinde, MLA from Thane constituency, and Shrikant Shinde, for their support and care for him. The former cricketer also expressed his desire to meet the Deputy Prime Minister personally to thank him for his support in his time of need, the report said.
Eknath and Shrikant Shinde are expected to visit him at the hospital soon, the report said.
