Prior to ICC Champions Trophy 2025, former Indian head coach Ravishastri opened to rivalry between India and Pakistan on Wednesday, and also provided insight into what manager Gautam Gambhir said, according to the ICC. Gambil recently stated that the importance of the Champions Trophy Group Stage Fixture against Pakistan is the same as all other fixtures in the event, with all games being equal value for the tournament. Speaking to Sanjana Ganesan in the latest edition of the ICC Review, Shastri said that while he was head coach, he had spoken fixtures on the same back of light, but there was more to it.
“I’ve been a coach for seven years. Whenever I was asked, I said the same thing (as with Gambil). But I’m deep in you, more than you actually think. There is one, it’s for the media. You are you. You are. You have to say that, but if you don’t win it, you will have to do it when you play against Pakistan. Because it reminds me.
“I don’t care what you’ve done in the past. If you win eight or nine, you’re not bothered by the last 10 games. They could be taxi drivers. Another beast.
India and Pakistan, who have been slotted in Group A of the Champions Trophy, are scheduled to face off in Dubai on February 23rd.
The two teams had previously locked their horns at the venue at the 2021 ICC tournament, when Pakistan registered a Mammoth 10 wicket victory.
However, Shastri believes that throwbacks do not take up much headspace for Indian players.
“No, it was a T20 game, so it doesn’t play in their minds. This is a 50-over clash. It’s completely different. It’s India’s longer game, because you can get upset in the T20. Beyond cricket, there is experience, depth in the batting and bowling sectors, and when you look at people in India and Pakistani, India makes a much better difference, and much more experienced.” said Shastri.
