Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson is really happening. Netflix is getting into the fight game for the first time to host a quirky boxing crossover.
Paul, 27, and Tyson, 57, are set to participate in an exhibition boxing match on November 15 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The fight will be streamed worldwide by Netflix, but won’t come with a PPV price tag Tyson’s legend and vast experience put him as a modest underdog. What Paul lacks in longevity he should make up for with youth, commitment and a capable team behind him.
The bout was originally scheduled to go down on July 20, but Tyson suffered a medical issue related to an ulcer that forced the postponement.
“I’m very ready,” Tyson said at a recent press conference to promote the fight. “I had a small disadvantage. I got sick, but I feel good. (…) I’m just ready. I’m just ready. I’m going to speak my mind and I’m going to speak my mind but I’m ready to fight.”
The fight will also be an officially sanctioned fight by the Texas Commission. The fight will be eight, two-minute rounds with slightly larger gloves than usual.
Paul (9-1, 6 KOs) is all-in on boxing. The YouTuber began boxing other social media stars before becoming a UFC fighter and experimenting with sweet science. Paul recently took a detour from beating older, younger MMA fighters like Anderson Silva and Nate Diaz and went down a more traditional developmental path. Paul marked a streak of consecutive knockout wins over club-level boxers in the lead up to the Tyson announcement.
“People are yelling at me at events, but what happens when I put this guy to sleep?” Dr. Paul at the press conference. “He’s saying it’s going to be my funeral. He’s saying it’s going to be my wake. He’s going to kill Jack Paul. All of that, and that’s why I love Mike. I respect him, but we’re not friends until November 15th. I’m knocking this mother out and we’re going to see who’s dead.”
Tyson (50-6-2 NC, 44 KOs) has not boxed publicly since his 2020 exhibition against fellow legend Roy Jones Jr. ended in a draw. It is often said that power is the last thing to go and “Iron” Mike will need it against an opponent 30 years his junior. Former undisputed world heavyweight boxing champion with wins over Larry Holmes and Michael Spinks is an all-time great.
The undercard will feature a fantastic rematch as Katie Taylor puts her undisputed super lightweight titles on the line against Amanda Serrano. The two women first headlined an event in April 2022 at Madison Square Garden with Taylor earning a split decision to retain her undisputed lightweight title. Now, the two will meet up a weight class after Taylor defeated Chantel Cameron via majority decision in November to claim the title.
Despite Taylor vs. Serrano being confirmed for the new date, promoters have yet to say whether the other two fights will take place, although a fight between Brazilian YouTuber Wunderson Nunes and professional boxer Neeraj Goat is set for the event.
